Scientists find the thick skull particularly fascinating. Due to the many layers of ossification, the brain was no bigger than a pea!
Several theories try explain how such a large creature managed to function while nearly lacking a brain. Some investigators contend that these dinosaurs used reflexes -- something very much like the knee-jerk -- instead of thought. Other biologists point to a large empty space in the pelvis as proof that these archaic animals possessed a brain in the rump instead of the head. Since the hip was double-jointed, the brutes were forced to do everything backwards. The relocation of the brain might have allowed for this unusual method of locomotion.
Why did these behemoths become extinct? There are a number of reasons.
In general, the dinosaurs all were wasteful and utilized resources inefficiently. The lumbering dinosaurs also were not able to adapt to a changing environment. Specifically, excavation of fossilized nesting areas show that the Lautenberg interruptus -- oblivious to the approach of the Tyranosaurus rex -- would simply sit and allow itself and its young to be slaughtered.
